The age old question...what does a shunt do?? 🤔 Let Nick explain in simple terms, but if you want to know more, here you go! Generically, a shunt is a hunk of metal that has a very specific and small resistance, usually around 50 milliohm. When current goes through the shunt, the current creates a voltage drop across the resistance. So if 100A goes through a 50 milliohm shunt, the voltage drop across the shunt is (Ohm's law) 100 x 0.05 = 5V. By measuring the voltage drop across a shunt, you know what amount of current is going through the shunt. Most people use one of many "smart shunt" products that include a circuit that measures and reports the current, doing this conversion for you. The main purpose of shunts is to provide arguably the best measure of the state-of-charge of a battery. By measuring the current going into and out of the battery over time you can tell how many amp-hours have been taken from the battery. What does an anode rod do? It attracts the sediment and corrosive elements (like minerals in the water) so that they corrode the anode rod rather than the inside of your water heater tank. Meet the other half of RV Solar Guys, Ben! A St. Louis, MO native, Ben moved to Fremont, CA in the early 80s. Following high school, he immersed himself in the family welding business, specializing in constructing trailers and installing towing accessories. Following 9/11, Ben sought a change of direction and delved into the hospitality industry. Around 2010, he rekindled his passion for RV repair, marking the beginning of a journey that led him to a newly opened Airstream dealership in Fairfield in 2013. Over the course of seven years, Ben progressed from a skilled technician to the shop foreman and ultimately ascended to the role of service manager. In late 2019, Ben transferred to the Morgan Hill location only to face the challenges of the global pandemic a few months later. Undeterred, he navigated through various roles until finding a position at an automotive shop - the same one where Nick worked. Post graduation, Nick dedicated five years to perfecting his craft at a well respected automotive shop.
